Buy a man a beer, and he wastes an hour.  Teach a man to brew, and he wastes a lifetime.
– Charles Papazian

I was actually looking for something closer to “teach a man to fish” when I found this quote by Papazian. Oh well… It’s time to announce another homebrewing workshop!

We’ll focus on making a 1 gallon batch of all-grain beer. Why only 1 gallon? Because you should know that anyone can make beer. With a stove and a stockpot you’re ready to get brewing! We’ll go through all the steps of making an all-grain batch of beer: mashing, sparging, boiling, chilling, sanitizing, fermenting, and even priming and bottling. And you’ll get to take home a couple of bottles of fresh beer that you bottled yourself!

In every workshop I host at Temescal Homebrewing we brew a different style of beer. In this one we’ll be making an Irish Stout. Coming out of the class you’ll be ready to whip up a few batches in time for St. Patrick’s Day.

But we won’t be brewing just any stout. We’ll go back in time to the early origins of what you know as a stout today, to the early 19th Century just before the Victorian Era. In 1816 a law was passed in the UK banning brewers from making additions other than malt and hops to their beer. Brewers had been using coloring and other additions because of increased malt taxes to pay for the Napoleonic War.

Opium made the list. No more Opium Stout!

The invention of black patent malt in 1817 solved this problem and gave us the dark black stout we know today.

We’ll also be adding whole leaf East Kent Golding hops in keeping with the style at the time. Sign up for the workshop and let’s brew together!
