So Many Summer Beer Festivals

Brews on the Bay, coming up in October

Brews on the Bay, coming up in October

We used to call this a heat wave. Now, I think it’s just called Summer. Here, in the SF Bay Area, it’s usually so cold at night, especially during Summer, we’re not used to being able to walk around at night without a lot of clothes on–during the day, who knows what you might see. I love Summer and I love the heat. There are so many Summer beer festivals coming up nearby, I couldn’t resist putting a list together.

First Scheduled Workshop and What Else Has Been Brewing

IMG_5035

Just bottled a Dark Vienna Lager with Figs and Meyer Lemon Leaves. The figs were from last Summer’s harvest.

It’s been a busy Spring. Here’s the short of it: The first scheduled workshop is now open for registration: Hops & Herbs: Organic Gardening for Home Brewers. Only 20 spots. Get yourself in there now! And more workshops are in the works.

The other big thing brewing is a major campaign. (You know what kind of campaign I mean…) And I’ve updated the logo to put a stake in the ground. It’s a sketch–which means we’re at the beginning of something big. Ideas are flowing. Pencil has been put to paper! You’ll see the website, and a whole lot of other stuff, developing out of this sketch into something HUGE!

For all the details, keep on reading…

Growing My Own Backyard Hops

Update, May 4, 2013: My Cascade hop plant is climbing up all six poles! See photos at the bottom of this post.

2013apr262-2048 My three year old Cascade hops plant is thriving in my backyard. I’m looking forward to brewing a really nice IPA at the end of Summer or early Fall. And in the SF Bay Area we get a pretty late summer, hotter than most of us are usually prepared for. The perfect time to escape to the bottom of a tall glass of cold beer, full of flavor and homemade goodness.

Spent Grain Muffins with Molasses and Yogurt

IMG_0535A few weeks ago I made a delicious 1 gallon batch of Brooklyn Brew Shop’s Smoked Wheat beer and had a couple of pounds of spent grain after it was all over.  I was going to compost it, but I read somewhere that I could feed it to my chickens.  They loved it!  As I gave it to them I could tell why they loved it–it has this sweet malty aroma that wraps around your nose like a warm blanket.  Why give it all to the birds!
